July 25 Friday

Well, we are still here in Europe. We have internet at the hotel we are staying at, so a post is in order. The location is Colmar France in the Alsace near Germany and Switzerland. The past five weeks have been filled with adventure and fun. To say that we love Europe would be a gross understatement.

Skipping over Italy and Paris, places we want to return to someday, lets talk about what we are doing now. This morning we walked down to the train station, bought tickets to the town of Munster and enjoyed a cup of expresso.

Train station

Perhaps you can guess why Linda wanted to visit Munster, it starts with "c", ends in "e" and is smelly. After yesterday's lunch of munster röstie there was no doubt in her mind that she needed to see the source of that wonderful food.

Cheese town

After a short train ride we found ourselves once again in a strange town not knowing where anything was, figuring the old town area was near the high steeple we could see we set off in that direction. That was when we got a surprise.

We never imagined there could be so many storks in one place. When you stand in the ruins of a building that dates from 660 AD watching litterly dozens of storks circle overhead, the feeling is indescribable.

Storks

Linda, however, was not forgetting the reason for our journey. Checking out the various shops selling that vary pungent cheese. At last she settled on the perfect piece, a small 4 inch wheel. As has usually been the case, the shopkeeper did not speak English, but that did not keep Linda from spending some Euros. It has continually amazed us at how inexpensive cheese is in Europe and we have done our very best to consume any over supply they may have. The typical cheeses we have in America simply don't exist here. It has been great fun buying cheese that we have no idea what it tastes like to discover that it tastes absolutely wonderful, but we don't have a clue as to what we bought.

We returned to Colmar in the early afternoon stopping at a side walk cafe where Linda had the best munster rostie ever. After the meal we were so stuffed that a light picnic was all we wanted the rest of the day. Yes, for the first time in recent memory we skipped dessert tonight, though we did take a late night walk through town. On Friday and Saturday nights the medieval buildings in the old town area are illuminated, but more than that people are everywhere, on the sidiewalks, in the streets and in the cafes, something we will really miss when we return to the States.

Our plans are to take the train the Switzerland on Sunday spending a week in the town where Bob's great grandfather was born. Then journeying by train up the Rhine Valley to Amsterday for the return back to the States.
